Completing the day-long SJCC competition, the Redwood Empire All-Stars will perform for an audience of budding jazz musicians, their family and friends, and the jazz-loving public. Led by Santa Rosa Junior College music teacher Bennett Friedman on tenor sax, with Doug Leibinger on trombone, Kasey Knudsen on alto, Carlitos Medrano on percussion (all pictured), plus Randy Vincent on guitar, Ken Cook on piano, Cliff Hugo on bass and Kendrick Freeman on drums, they’ll show how far local jazz can go.
This evening concert shows off the talents not only the homegrown Redwood Empire All-Stars – all high-caliber musicians who live in Sonoma County – but of the high-school age kids who have taken part in the first SRCC. Earlier in the day the 11 teams will have met in professionally-juried competition, for prizes including a chance to open for headliner Lavay Smith and Her Red-Hot Skillet Lickers, at the Raven Theater on June 9.
Come see the climax of the Student Jazz Combo Competition, an evening concert featuring some the best jazz musicians in the county, followed by an on-stage jam with student participants in the SJCC.
Tickets are only $10 for adults, free for students 18 and under. Tickets at Brown Paper Tickets now.
