lecture-picturesWhat do Louie Armstrong, Bo Diddley, Walt Disney, Elvis Presley, and Bill Cosby have in common? They’ve all used Latin American musical elements in their work, thereby playing important roles in the ever-growing awareness of Latin American roots in U.S. pop culture.

The parallel relationship and syncretization of Jazz and Latin American music provide a rich and fascinating perspective on this process. It’s all quite logical when you consider that the birthplace of Jazz — New Orleans – is a Caribbean port.

carmen-mirandaThis lecture by five-time Grammy nominee John Santos will include rare recordings from Mr. Santos’s legendary collection and discussion of the roots and relevance of Latino Caribbean music throughout the Americas. Bring all your questions, propositions, opinions, and open ears to this unique event.

Sorry, this event has been cancelled.

“Some voices are astringent like gin, some sweet like sherry. West has a red wine voice — a deep, mellow Cabernet voice.”
    – Joe Brown, SF Chronicle

The “Great American Songbook” has never sounded so captivating as it does when Paula West sings. With a particular dusky soulfulness, wide repertoire and technical as well as emotional expertise, West has captured the hearts of critics and audiences alike from coast to coast.

Respected for her creative and distinct repertoire, West adds her own depth and drama to whichever song she chooses, creating whole new frameworks of meaning for American favorites, and evoking an emotional response from even the most cynical listener.

Raised in San Diego, it was in San Francisco that she became a cabaret and lounge singer, performing at the Ritz Carleton in San Francisco and in New York at the Oak Room of the Algonquin. Her career has continued to build from enthusiastic word-of-mouth, and recent gigs at Yoshi’s Oakland have brought her back closer to home.

George Mesterhazy has been playing behind West for the past couple years, and together they create spontaneous, free-flowing interpretations of jazz classics, pop hits and show tunes that are soul searching and satisfying. Mesterhazy, who memorably backed the legendary Shirley Horn among other top vocalists, recently played in trio with Eric Marshall and Fred Randolph and we can expect an equally polished band for this benefit.
