What is the Healdsburg Jazz Festival all about?
It’s about new performers like Debbie Poryes, Jason Bodlovich and Noam Lemish spotlighted in the “Rising Stars” concert on Thursday (June 4). Established talent whose greatness spans the decades, like John Handy and Denny Zeitlin, headlining the “Living Legends” concert on Friday (June 5). Jazz giants who helped create ‘world music’ and are still searching for that higher groove, like Randy Weston and the African Rhythms Quintet, Saturday night at the Raven (June 6).
It’s about the rousing sounds of the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir at the Raven Theater, an ensemble of multicultural vocalists bringing a jolt of modern energy to age-old standards. And it’s about straight-ahead real jazz like it’s meant to be played, full of joy, soul and creative spirit, as when James Moody, Marlena Shaw, Richard Howell and their groups played the picnic green at Rodney Strong to answer the question: This is what the Healdsburg Jazz Festival is all about!
