Just about every city has a first-call jazz drummer, the cat that world-class out-of-town players hire when they’re traveling without their own rhythm section. In San Francisco for the past 40 years Eddie Marshall’s phone number has been at the top of the list.
Since his days as the house drummer at Keystone Korner, where he accompanied heavyweights such as Dexter Gordon, Freddie Hubbard, Stan Getz, Bobby Hutcherson and Woody Shaw, Marshall has provided tasteful and powerfully swinging rhythmic support to the best musicians performing in the Bay Area.
Over the past decade or so, he has increasingly stepped forward as a bandleader in his own right, developing a tasty book of standards and originals that reflect his capacious musical imagination. Always keeping company with the finest players, his trio includes bassist Glenn Richman and pianist Joe Gilman. This trio has just finished recording a new project with Bobby Hutcherson.
