June 4 – Roger Glenn Latin Jazz Ensemble
The Bay Area is blessed with fine Latin jazz talent, and many of them are assembled in Roger Glenn’s Latin Jazz Ensemble, playing the Healdsburg Jazz Festival free at Healdsburg Plaza on Tuesday. Healdsburg’s Tuesday Concerts in the Plaza are a local legend, and we’re proud to continue our tradition of the filling the first Tuesday in June with jazz.
Roger Glenn is a multi-instrumentalist whose father, Tyree, played trombone and vibes in the bands of Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong. Roger learned the vibes from Tyree, then picked up the flute, oboe, saxophone, clarinet and various Latin percussion instruments along the way. He has toured and recorded with legendarys artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Mongo Santamaria, Donald Byrd, Herbie Mann, Rosemary Clooney, Pete Escovedo and Cal Tjader – playing flute on the Grammy Award winning album La Onda Va Bien.
Glenn’s Latin Jazz Ensemble consists of guitarist Ray Obeido, pianist Bob Karty, bassist David Belove, conguero Derek Rolando and drummer Phil Thompson. Come dance as the rhythm players conjure mighty grooves and Glenn whips up a firestorm on his woodwinds, reeds or vibes.
Afterwards, if the Latin rhythms in your blood just won’t stop, head to Partake for Carlitos Medrano and Sabor de Mi Cuba.
