Saturday, June 5

Bennett Friedman Quartet

Location: Flying Goat Coffee
Address: 324 Center Street, Healdsburg
Two shows: 7 pm* and 9 pm
Tickets: $10

Bennett FriedmanA mainstay on the Bay Area jazz scene for five decades, Bennett Friedman is a hard swinging saxophonist steeped in bebop. The Berkeley native led a talent-laden big band in the late 1960s and 70s, and accompanied stars such as Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Marvin Gaye as a member of the Circle Star Theater Orchestra. On faculty at Santa Rosa Junior College since 1977, he’s mentored hundreds of musicians over the years, and is now head of the SRCJ music department.

Freidman will be joined by a veteran rhythm section featuring drummer Lorca Hart and guitarist Randy Vincent, a supremely fluid and flexible player who elevates every ensemble he joins. Anchoring the band is ace bassist Chris Amberger, who has toured with legends such as George Shearing, Rosemary Clooney, Red Garland, and Art Blakey.

There will be two shows at the Flying Goat on Saturday night, 7 pm* and 9 pm. Get there early as seating is limited, and we do recommend purchasing tickets online. When you go to the ticket order page, select which show you are buying tickets for in the dropdown menu at the top right.

* The 7 pm show is SOLD OUT. Thank you for your support.

[...] Saturday evening, 7 pm and 9 pm: Flying Goat Coffee is where we go for that morning lift – espresso and a muffin – and we’re not alone. The place is hoppin’ for half the day, but that’s nothing like how it will be boppin’ when the Bennett Friedman Quartet plays two shows here the first Saturday of the festival. Saxophonist Friedman has been a mentor to local jazz students for over 30 years, and he hews true to the hard bop tradition. He’ll be joined by a rhythm section featuring drummer Lorca Hart and ace bassist Chris Amberger, with guitarist Randy Vincent adding his fluid licks to the saxophone-led quartet. You’ll find the close proximity to this great music will open your eyes and ears to things you never heard before! [...]
