Luiz Brasilknown as the lead guitarist in the bands of Caetano Veloso, Gilbert Gil and Gal Costa, will make a very rare United States appearance showcasing his talents as a bandleader. He is one of the most in-demand guitarists in Brazil, and we are fortunate to have the opportunity to present this amazing musician.

Born in Salvador, Bahia, in 1954, Brasil is best known for his performances with Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Nando Reis, Cássia Eller, and many other stars of Brazil.

He was born into a musical family: his mother played piano, his brothers Jorge and Marcelo became drummers, and his brother Mou became a jazz guitarist. More recently, his daughter Tamima Brasil is a percussionist.

His early career included stints with rock groups and the carnaval Trio elétrico. More recently he has performed as a multi-instrumentalist, arranger, composer, teacher and occasional singer. His first solo album was Brasilêru, released in 2005. A second, Beira, was released in 2011. Expect to hear music from these recording in Healdsburg on Friday, May 15.

Here’s a YouTube link of Brasil and a backing quartet. In Healdsburg he’ll be performing with top Bay Area musicians, Harvey Wainapel (sax), Celso Alberti (drums) and Scotty Thompson (bass) for this very special concert in the intimate setting of the Paul Mahder Gallery.

Celso at Drums Promo 6

Celso Alberti was born in Curitiba, Southern Brazil. The driving rhythms of his country’s music led him to develop an early interest in the drums and by the age of 17, he was performing regularly as a professional.   Celso relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1984, where he joined Terra Sul, a Brazilian band based in San Francisco. Two years later, Celso joined Batucaje, which won that year’s “Jammies” Music Award for “Best Brazilian Band” in the Bay Area. He also embarked on his first major international tour with world-renowned percussionist Airto Moreira and singer Flora Purim.

Celso’s dynamic drumming style, blending traditional Brazilian music with World and Rock influences, was quickly recognized and he soon started to work with musicians like Herbie Mann, John Lucien, Michael Manring, Joyce Cooling, Craig Chaquico, Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, Jose Neto, Chico Pinheiro, Emilio Santiago, Claudia Villela, George Brooks, Andrei Kondakov and  Steve Winwood.

Saxophonist/clarinetist Harvey Wainapel has performed with the likes of McCoy Tyner, Joe Lovano, Ray Charles, Dave Brubeck and Joe Henderson. Besides working with these and numerous other leaders, Wainapel has toured extensively under his own name, and has performed in 22 countries. His heavy involvement with the music of Brazil has led to performances with top-level musicians such as Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, Dori Caymmi, Guinga, Paulo Bellinati, Spok, Nelson Ayres, Filó Machado and Jovino Santos Neto. Wainapel was a featured soloist on two CDs that were final nominees for Latin Grammy Awards™ “Best Latin Jazz Recording” (with Jovino Santos Neto in 2004 and with Mark Levine in 2003).

Brazilian icon Ivan Lins enthuses “Harvey understands Brazilian music in a way that’s very unusual; he’s got the spirit, he’s a great musician!” Rio de Janeiro’s daily newspaper O Globo, reviewing a live performance in Rio, writes “Wainapel displayed incredible intimacy with the language of Brazilian music, and great stage presence.”
