Acclaimed jazz drummer and Grammy nominee Matt Wilson brings his “unabashed joy to the bandstand” as Healdsburg Jazz presents Wilson’s Honey and Salt on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at the Paul Mahder Gallery. Featuring Wilson with his all-star band — including cornetist Ron Miles, multi-reedist Jeff Lederer, bassist Martin Wind and pianist/vocalist Dawn Clement — the project pays tribute to “the poet of the people,” Carl Sandburg, on the 50th anniversary of the poet’s death.

Few musicians embody the spontaneous energy of jazz quite like Matt Wilson. The New York-based drummer combines buoyant zeal, idiosyncratic style, infectious humor, joyous swing, and an indomitable spirit of surprise, making him one of the most in demand players and educators on the modern jazz scene.

Wilson’s 13th recording as a leader for Palmetto, Honey and Salt (Music Inspired by the Poetry of Carl Sandburg) received a 5-star review in DownBeat which called it “irresistible.” Click to download the review (PDF, 209 kb).

Matt Wilson’s Honey and Salt pays tribute to the “poet of the people,” Carl Sandberg, who won three Pulitzer Prizes, wrote the definitive biography of Abraham Lincoln, advocated for civil rights and traveled the country collecting traditional folk songs. When Sandburg died in 1967, President Lyndon B. Johnson hailed the famed poet as “more than the voice of America, more than the poet of its strength and genius. He was America.”

Concert starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $30 available at www.healdsburgjazz.org, by phone at 800-838-3006. Or at the venue during business hours and day of the event (subject to availability), www.paulmahdergallery.com
