For the first time since her thrilling inauguration of Healdsburg Jazz’s “Parlor Jazz” series just a year ago, on October 11, 2015, pianist/composer Helen Sung returns to town, this time with her Quartet, featuring some of the finest voices of this generation – John Ellis (tenor saxophone), Boris Kozlov (bass), and Terreon Gully (drums).
Building on the musical vistas of her Concord Jazz release, “Anthem For A New Day,” Sung continues the quest for artistic discovery with inspiration coming from diverse and unexpected places. For example, her growing familiarity with Charles Mingus (through her work with the Mingus Big Band, which features Kozlov in the all-important bass chair) has resulted in new compositions that grapple, as he did so masterfully, with contemporary themes and issues.
The colors and textures of Sung’s classical training also continue to inform her jazz work in deeper and more profound ways. The Helen Sung Quartet has been regularly touring both the United States and internationally, captivating audiences everywhere with music that has been called “soulful,” “smart,” and punctuated by irresistible grooves. With selections from Anthem as well as previews of new material from her upcoming 2017 release, expect songs that touch both the heart and mind, and a musical program of re-imagined jazz standards and original compositions that form a beautiful tapestry interwoven from these exceptional artists’ shared and personal stories.
Tickets are $32, with a limited number of seats available. We have a new ticket purchase system that will allow you to easily track all your Healdsburg Jazz events and other interactions with us, once you get your account set up. Please follow this link to get started.
